LUMUN Social Responsibility Program based its agenda for this year on the two UN Millennium Development Goals of 1) achieving Universal Primary Education and 2) attaining Environment Sustainability. In order to broaden the scope of our efforts in these two areas, we held the E-squared Community Challenge. The aim of this challenge was to bring about a positive change in the thinking of the student-body coming to the conference and promote a level of activism in the youth of today!
The E2 –Community Challenge was a forum that we presented to all visiting delegations to actively discuss, propose solutions and tackle issues related to education and environment in Pakistan. Each institute was asked to identify a particular problem (related to education or environment) within their community and propose solutions to the identified problem.
Top nine proposals were short-listed out of the thirty-five proposals received on the basis of practicality, relevance, comprehensiveness and feasibility of the plans. These institutes then presented their projects at the E2 –Community Challenge Forum during LUMUN 2009 in front of an audience compromising of LUMS students, delegates and representatives of various NGOs. They were judged by a panel of esteemed personalities including Mr. Sohail Rana, Dr. Ejaz Akram, and Mrs. Shireen Iftikhar.
The winning project for the environment category was proposed by the delegation from SICAS – Lahore and FAST-Islamabad earned top honors for their plan for the advancement of education. These projects have been promised and will be receiving full technical, advisory and financial assistance from LUMUN.
