The LUMS Model United Nations Society (LUMUN) is an entirely student-run society at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan, which introduced the concept of MUN simulation in Pakistan. Being the pioneer, it is currently the largest and most reputed student gathering of its kind in Pakistan.
Founded in 2002, LUMUN’s sole aim has been to increase awareness amongst the youth in Pakistan of local, regional and global issues. The aim is primarily realized via the platform of Model United Nations conferences which LUMUN organizes in Pakistan and abroad. A usual LUMUN calendar includes:
- The bi-annual Intra-LUMS conferences for LUMS students in Spring and Fall semester;
- An annual All-Pakistan Model UN Conference for schools and colleges across Pakistan;
- The annual Eurasia MUN Conference in Geneva in partnership with the Geneva International Model UN Society (GIMUN).
To further promote grass-root MUN culture in Pakistan, we commenced the LUMUN Affiliate program that provides institutional and technical support to schools that wish to set up their independent Model UN platforms. Under this program, four schools have started their own conferences in 2009: Lahore Grammar School, Defence Campus (LGSMUN), Aitchison College, Lahore (ACMUN), Frobel’s International School, Islamabad (FroMUN) and SICAS, Lahore (SICAS MUN).
LUMUN, in addition, has evolved from simply a Model UN society to incorporate the advancement of two of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – Education and Environment – in Pakistan via its Social Responsibility Program (LUMUN SRP). It has affiliated with two prominent NGOs – CARE Foundation, Pakistan and SAVE. Under this program, LUMUN volunteers have conducted various workshops that include Teacher Training, Student Mentorship and MUN Training to equip them with the necessary skill set to participate in mainstream English-language debating competitions and MUN conferences.
LUMUN also participates at International MUN Conferences, most notably the Harvard World MUN Conference where it has received the prestigious Outstanding Delegation award for four years in a row – at Beijing (2006), Geneva (2007), Puebla City, Mexico (2008) and The Hague, Netherlands (2009). Its members have won numerous Diplomacy awards at conferences in Turkey, Austria, Switzerland and India.
