The LUMS Model United Nations Society (LUMUN) hosted its first Spring MUN Conference on May 16th, 2009 amid an ambience of high spirits and intense negotiations. The conference witnessed students assuming the roles of ambassadors of various countries to simulated committees of the United Nations to discuss issues of global importance. The committees replicated were the First and Third Committees of the General Assembly and the UN Development Program which discussed the pertinent issues of the financing of terrorist organizations by illicit drug trade, religious discrimination and transparent electoral processes respectively.
Various dignitaries attended the conference including Mr. Engin Soysal, the Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan, US Consul General in Lahore Mr. Bryan D. Hunt and Honorary Consul Generals of Malaysia and Turkey. The Chief Guest for the ceremony was Syed Babar Ali, Founder and Pro-Chancellor of LUMS. He applauded the LUMS Model UN Society for arranging such platforms that provide an opportunity for students to engage in healthy dialogue and promote tolerance.
The Vice Chancellor of LUMS, Mr. Ahmad Jan Durrani applauded the performance of LUMUN team at the international arena where they won the “Outstanding Delegation” Award at the Harvard WorldMUN 2009 in The Hague, Netherlands and MUN Turkey 2009 in Izmir, Turkey, this March.
This year marks LUMUN’s fourth consecutive victory at the most reputed MUN conference in the world organized by Harvard University. LUMUN team has won in Beijing (2006), Geneva (2007) and Mexico (2008) outshining world-class institutions such as Yale, Oxford, Stanford etc. The conferences provided an opportunity for the students to interact with a global audience and were well utilized to leave a strong, lasting impression of an educated, well-informed and competitive Pakistani youth.
